Spinal Cord Trauma

Spinal trauma can be a devastating injury if the patient is not rapidly assessed and treated appropriately. However, depending on the degree of neurologic impairment, spinal stabilization may improve comfort and allow the bones and spinal cord to heal.
Symptoms
Abrupt onset of neurological deficits, usually not progressive
Physical Examination Findings
- Focal spine pain
- Neurological deficits (ranging from mild ataxia to paralysis)
- May have concurrent conditions secondary to traumatic event
Advanced Diagnostics
MRI, Radiographs (x-rays), CT scan
Treatment
Treatment may include general trauma management (supportive care) and pain management. Surgery may be warranted in cases where stability of the spine is compromised (spinal decompression).
