GAIT4Dog®, the gait analysis system utilized by VOSM, assesses whether your canine athlete is orthopedically sound. It's a pressure sensitive walkway measurement system designed to capture and objectively analyze data in minutes.
With this technology, we can assess not just orthopedic soundness (total pressure index), providing you a baseline to enter the next season, but a whole host of other information: step and stride length, velocity, stance time, swing time, and more.
We feel it's important to have this objective, healthy baseline even before an orthopedic condition presents. That way, if your dog does ever come up lame or you notice performance issues during a race, we'll be able to obtain a second gait analysis at time of orthopedic consult and compare the two reports.

Understanding Gait Analysis
The MOST important measurement is the total pressure index. Most breeds place more of their weight on their forelimbs compared to their hind limbs. For the majority of breeds, this distribution falls somewhere between 60% of the dog's weight on the forelimbs (30% on each limb) and 40% on the hind limbs (20% on each limb).
Keep in mind, though, that this is very much breed-specific and no dog will have entirely even weight distribution across both forelimbs and both hind limbs. In reality, some dogs tend to place slightly more weight on their dominant side.
Our analysis will provide you with these percentages so you won't have to calculate them.
Below, we've included two videos. The first shows Chloe, a dog with left forelimb lameness (supraspinatus tendinopathy), at her initial appointment. The second is Buyer, a dog we treated for right forelimb lameness (medial shoulder instability), at his 12-month recheck.

The total pressure index (explained above) and total pressure index percentage (labeled as TPI %) for each limb are both highlighted in yellow. You'll notice that Chloe's initial report indicates much more pressure placed on her right forelimb, whereas Buyer's final report shows much more equal distribution across both forelimbs.
Why is this information so crucial?
Sporting dogs are tough; they don't always show signs of pain or limping when they're injured. Having this objective analysis provides you with a baseline to refer back to. That way, should your athlete have any performance issues or gait abnormalities throughout the season, you'll have a benchmark for your dog's healthy gait and be able to objectively assess variance from this baseline measurement.
And, if you think your dog might already have an orthopedic condition, this is a quick and easy opportunity to objectively measure any lameness or gait abnormalities.

Temporal (Timing) Parameters
Gait cycle is the elapsed time between the first contact of two consecutive footfalls of the same foot. For instance, the time between the first contact of the right forelimb to the second contact of the right forelimb.
Velocity is calculated by dividing the distance by the ambulation time.
Stance Time is the elapsed time between the first contact and the last contact of two consecutive footfalls on the same foot (eg. how long some part of the foot is touching the ground before it is lifted up again). It is also presented as a percentage of the Gait Cycle parameter for the same foot.
Swing Time is the elapsed time between the last contact of the current footfall to the first contact of the next footfall on the same foot (eg. how long between the time the foot is lifted up until some part of the foot again touches the ground). It is also presented as a percentage of the Gait Cycle parameter for the same foot.
*Swing Time is equivalent to Single Support Time for the opposite foot.
Spatial (Distance) Parameters
Step Length is measured on the horizontal axis of the walkway from the heel point of the current footfall to the heel point of the previous footfall on the opposite foot. Step length can be a negative value if the patient doesn’t bring the landing foot’s heel point forward from the stationary foot’s heel point.
Stride Length is measured on the line of progression between the heel points of two consecutive footfalls of the same foot (eg. left to left, right to right).
Distance is measured on the horizontal axis from the heel point of the first footfall to the heel point of the last footfall.
